Walking Meditation For Writers

by | Dec 4, 2024

This isn’t about how meditation is good for our mental health, although I could use a little more mental health right now.

It’s about how a specific walking meditation can make you a better writer.

Doing this meditation made me more observant and more specific with my language. Did it make my writing more evocative? I can only hope.

Here’s what to do:

🌻 Go for a walk outside. As you walk, notice 5 things you see. Describe them. Be specific and accurate. If you say, “I see a red car,” is ‘red’ the most accurate, most truthful way to describe the car? Is ‘car’? After you have described 5 things you saw, move on.

🌻 Describe 4 things you hear. Follow the same process. Again, be exact. Is ‘chirp’ the most accurate way to convey what you heard?

🌻 Describe 3 things you feel. Not emotions, sensations. Same process, same exactitude.

🌻 Describe 2 things you smell. Ditto.

🌻 Describe 1 thing you taste. Ditto.

Typically, I do this on my first walk of the day with Roxie. I’ll share what I’ve learned, but not yet. I’d like you to have your own spoiler-free experience first.
