Because I was feeling unsettled from exploring family trauma, and because my therapist is of the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy branch of psychology, and because I wanted to know more about Internal Family Systems therapy, I went there next.
Time to focus inward, not outward.
Searching “IFS” on InsightTimer, a meditation by Dan Roberts popped up on my screen. I listened to it, liked it, and then hopped over the paywall to listen to his eight-episode course.
Nuggets from Lesson 1:
The nature of the baby’s early attachment to the mother affects future attachments, especially romantic attachments. (Did this contribute to my spotty relationship history?)
Babies have different temperaments. Those who are more emotional (rather than analytical) and sensitive (rather than insensitive) are more vulnerable to an unstable attachment.
A college professor once said to me, “Jule, you’re going to need to get tougher. You’ll never make it in the corporate world being this sensitive.”
It ticked me off, but he had a point. And then I set out to prove him wrong.
